Dear Gardening Friends,

Welcome to English Garden Farm!

English Garden Farm is a 3 acre (more or less) private garden that is actually open to the public. We started as vest-pocket nursery (hobby, truth be told) in the inner city of Columbus, Ohio in 1993 and, in search of more space, moved to the country in 2000. After having destroyed some body joints and frazzled several nerves running the nursery, we realized that gardening had the potential of being a joyful enterprise – without the nursery. The storm-tossed loss of some greenhouse plastic and subsequent violent demise of many thousands of dollars of specimen-sized, rare Japanese maples and other such goodies in early 2007 confirmed the fact that this was a hobby gone awry. So what had passed as a nursery ceased operation and space (and effort) was given over to making the garden what we had wanted it to be all along – a place for growing (and looking at) wonderful plants that could be shared with friends and other gardeners (who are almost always friends – automatically).

The garden has developed in a manner which I preached during the nursery years: start with the big stuff first, then fill with smaller shrubs, then the perennials and finally, bulbs.

We are progressing through the smaller shrub stage and are adding some perennials, not because the garden is necessarily ready for them but just because we can’t help it. Even though the garden is not yet replete with the perennially flowering herbaceous goodies one always hopes for, we think you will still find it of interest with over 400 different kinds of trees and shrubs including 50 different old-fashioned garden-type and shrub roses and 100+ different conifers. Please plan to visit when you can take the time to look at details; many of our plants are rare and unusual and deserve more than a cursory glance.

Looking forward to seeing some of you soon,

Craig Jaynes (Mr. Greenjaynes – blame a former customer for that one.)
